Notes from last month's meeting - Darryl Bielski
Our January meeting provided us with a lecture from Vermont magician Alyx Hilshey. To paraphrase the Doobie Brothers song "Takin' It To The Streets", Alyx has been doing that for some time as a street performer. However, she has also performed on cruises, at The Magic Castle and on Penn & Teller's "Fool Us." Quite the resume'! She opened with her street performance opener of a wand vanish and coin vanish, and with the help of Gayle Alexander, was able to produce a jumbo coin. That would certainly get even a jaded crowd on the street to take notice! With a little help from Anna, Alyx gave us a beguiling routine of metal bending, then kindly provided us with the lowdown on what to do with the hardware. She showed us some ball manipulation, then the cups and balls. Even with these props that have been used for many years, in the hands of someone that really knows what they're doing, it was a thing of beauty to watch. The cups and balls stands the test of time. Later on, Max Droge assisted Alyx with some card effects. She not only gave us the "what" of what she was doing, but also the rationale behind it. Whether it was how to attract a crowd when you're on the street, but also in different settings for different crowds. It was certainly a great way to start off the new year. Thanks so much Alyx!
