S.A.M. Al Baker Assembly #35 Newsletter

October 2022

President’s Words

As Max Maven is fond of saying,”BOO”.  Welcome to the magic month of October.  I want to thank both Jace and Craig Dickson for a wonderful meeting last month.  Their instruction was both detailed and informative.

This month we’re going to continue with our learning - all paid members of Assembly 35 will receive the very limited edition S.A.M. Phoenix marked and stacked deck at the meeting.  Not only will we be discussing how to use the deck, but we will be watching an episode of V1.2 on false shuffles.  As we talked about last meeting, I want every one of you to have an EDC (every day carry) - those items that you carry in your arsenal each and every day to perform at a moment's notice.

We will be getting together at 6 pm for dinner at the Milanese if you can join us.

Also - if you have an upcoming public show, I’d like to start promoting them on our Facebook page - just send me all the information (and photos if you have them) and I’ll get them on.

Don’t forget, the last week of October celebrates National Magic Week!  This is a GREAT opportunity to help promote the art of magic around the country including right here in the Hudson Valley.  For more information on how to promote your event Download the Magic Week Informational Flyer.  If you are a performer, to report your event, Click HERE

We have some phenomenal meetings upcoming - thank you for being Magic Week - The Society of American Magicians (magicsam.com) a member of the Society of American Magicians!

Last Meeting - Roundtable teach-in featuring PNP Craig Dickson and Jace

This past August our club held our annual summer party at a new location.  The park has a covered pavilion to provide shade or cover depending on the weather and to start off we couldn't have asked for a better day.  There was plenty of food to go around, followed by plenty of dessert as well.  Next year we'll have to provide some hammocks for afternoon naps.  Following the food, there was magical entertainment provided, so it was a perfect way to spend a Saturday afternoon, and a great time to get a photo of our club members.

Our new year of meetings began on September 13th, with PNP Joel Zaritsky now presiding over the presidency of our club again.  The theme of this year's slate of meetings will be "EDC", or "Every Day Carry."  What can people carry with them to provide a magical moment or interlude for someone?  We had 2 areas set up for people to get up close and personal information on a couple of different and easily carried effects; the center tear and the magic square. PNP Craig Dickson held court with the magic square with Jace showing the center tear.  The basic information was given at both for anyone not familiar with the effects, or perhaps the details were a bit foggy for anyone that maybe hasn't done them in a while.  From there, different possibilities were explored to get people's creative juices flowing.  Both effects have been around for a while, but that doesn't mean that they can't still be entertaining. Like the old saying goes, "what's old can be new again." This evening's lectures proved that point.  Another fun year awaits us!
