April 2022

President's Words ~ Write on Que

Hello Compeers,

April is here and the days are definitely getting longer.  I find myself staying at the shop longer, because of the daylight.  I am happy about the rain, I'll take it in this form rather than snow.  We definitely need it.  Dawn and I took a drive through the Catskills and the reservoirs are empty.  So I rather have a rainy spring and a dry summer when it's warm and sunny.  Our next meeting is April 12 at the Milanese restaurant Main Street in Poughkeepsie, 7:30pm, Dinner at 6:00pm open to everyone.

I have been talking with Frank and Joel about our banquet and proposed that we combine Joel's annual picnic with our 80th banquet.  Joel's Barbecue has been such a success that we can't go wrong with combining them.  The plan would be to have it the first weekend in August, hoping to grab a performer in the country coming from FISM the week before.

First up this month we'll be critiquing Jackie Reynolds on her two clown skits that she will be performing in competition at the National convention for Clowns of America International.  So please give your honest opinion, good or bad.  This is how you grow as a performer.  Next a short business meeting then right into our lecture by David Jonathan.  He has quickly emerged as a star creator with a reputation for consistently releasing innovative, practical effects to the community.

He's been nominated as Inventor of The Year multiple times at the Penguin Magic Awards and won the 2021 Creator Of The Year award from Magic TV.  His most popular release SNAPS (co-created with Dan Harlan) won many Trick of The Year Awards as well.

He's collaborated with many of the top names in magic and has worked directly with the biggest companies in the industry to produce best selling effects, including Murphy's Magic, Penguin Magic, Alakazam, The 1914, Mark Mason's JB Magic and more.

David has also presented his critically acclaimed lecture to more than 100 clubs spanning 18 different countries across the globe and won 2021 Lecture of The Year from Alakazam Magic.

Last Meeting - Dollar Store Magic Show

We gather for our March meeting as we approach the arrival of Spring.  However, we're not thinking of the next few months as we are the last few months of the year as we plan our banquet for November, and our fundraiser as well. Decisions, decisions...

The idea for tonight's meetings comes from our PNP Joel Zaritsky.  The premise is..what would you do if you had to do a show using only materials bought in a dollar store.  Joel gets the evening off and running using a regular sandwich baggie as a clear change bag.  Is your fancy new set of cups and balls that you ordered stuck in a supply chain purgatory maybe to arrive in a few months?  Some coffee cups and tissue paper can serve you in its stead.  Torn and restored tissue paper works too.

Max Droge was up next.  How he walked into the place with that large stone in his shoe, I'll never know.  Max's trip to the dollar store turns up a purchase of a large sponge.  Don't forget to also pick up a pair of scissors from aisle 7, and you'll have your own custom set of sponge balls.  Maybe they won't be too round, but they'll do.  Hopefully that dollar store you stop at is large enough to have a book section of books you've never heard of written by people you've never heard of for a book test.  Get some rope for a Professor's nightmare.  Your newly purchased scissors will get quite the workout after this.

Willie Yee is next with a deck of cards and scissors and the always popular card warp.  With some glue and some bills that you have in your wallet or purse and you've got some bill changes you can do.  Don't forget the rubber bands for some linking/unlinking.  Plus, they can hold all your purchases together if the dollar store doesn't have any plastic bags to use.

Jackie Reynolds reminded us that dollar bills can always be origamied into something too.  You can always buy those beer pong sized plastic cups too for a shell game using that sponge you bought earlier and spent seconds cutting up.  A fun and informative night it was.
