February 2022

President's Words ~ Write on Que

Hello chilly February,

I hope this letter finds everyone warm and toasty. I don't like these single number temperatures. Now I know why old people move to Florida. This meeting will be my 64 birthday! I can't believe it. Old people are 64, not me. It feels like just a few weeks ago I opened my body shop in 1980. It was 1990 that I was introduced to the Al Baker Assembly and I told Dawn these are real magicians. Little did I know what I was getting myself into. Our grandparents told us time flies, but you just didn't know how to comprehend it. Now here we are, saying what the hell just happened.

So last month we had a small turn out, but it was cold and I believe next week will also be cold. But either way we will have a meeting. We will continue our teach a trick night. So please bring some cards, coins and rope with you. Also anything you would like to share.

Last month we talked about a fundraiser and banquet for our 80 birthday. We'll continue our talks, hopefully getting some dates and times down.

PNP Joel Zaritsky just got back from the National S.A.M. Convention in Las Vegas and will be sharing everything that happened out there with us.  So if you want to know what's new in magic don't miss this meeting; same Bat place, same Bat time, 2/8/2022 7:30pm

President, Al Baker Assembly #35

This Month

Tuesday, February 8th 7:30 p.m.

at Milanese Italian Restaurant 115 Main St, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601

Teach a trick night.  Bring something you would like to share.

Last Meeting

As 2021 came to a close, with 2022 just beginning, though different, they were both very much the same. How so? Well, both meetings featured "teach a trick" lessons from members. PNP Joel Zaritsky performed "what we do in the shadows", where pieces of rope would mysteriously link inside the box of shadows. Joe Q did a card effect where a selected card along with other cards are ripped up and put inside of a bag. 4 pieces are then pulled out, which turns out to be the total selected card. Several other card tricks are shown, first with Willie Yee and Glen Mackin, followed by Frank Monaco and Joe Q, Steve Johnson closed out the evening. Earlier he had handed out copies of lecture notes that were written by our own Ed Fitchett. A lot of good information is contained in those pages, and also provides a fond remembrance of Mr. Fitchett. Steve performed a prediction effect with the end result being a "green"-nosed reindeer. If they ever decide to make a sequel to that animated Christmas special, they might want to consider this one.

Our January meeting was held on a night that was, well, cold, frigid, bitter..all of these words would be most appropriate. This year will be our club's 80th birthday, so festivities to honor that milestone will be coming up later this year. PNP Joel Zaritsky performed "Professor's Nightmare", then showed how it is done with a handling that is very effective and clean. Frank Monaco performed the Invisible Deck, followed by a discussion of roughing fluid vs. roughing stick. He followed that with his handling of Matrix, with Steve Johnson also showing how he does his. It was a good way to start off the new year. Thanks to everyone who showed up!
